COMPANIES HISTORY

Three large-size picture generations
The start-up of Attilio Meyer AG began no differently than the beginnings of other pioneers: Those were the days! In 1945 Attilio and Elsa Meyer's three bed apartment at Küngenmattstrasse 25 in Zurich was transformed into a photographic laboratory. They built the enlarger themselves from different parts of appliances and they used the apartment walls as the projection screen. Once created, the prints were dried in the children’s rooms. For many years Attilio Meyer used the tram as his main means of transportation until he could finally afford a Peugeot 202.

Early superlative
The largest photo produced by Attilio Meyer has a length of 60 meters and takes place in the music room of a nearby school. His first clients were initially industrial companies and his first enlargements were for Jelmoli. Little by little major companies in the film industry, such as MGM, 20th Century Fox and Universal, became a part of the clientele of Attilio Meyer. Over the years the business grew stronger. Soon the apartment became too small and the work load too much. In 1958 they converted rooms from a butcher’s shop at Bühlstrasse 19 and hired an employee.

Extended offer
In 1961 the second generation, 16 year old Marco A. Meyer, joined the company. Soon he extended the company to offer new services. When an order from Unartisco came in for the promotion of the movie "West Side Story", a new branch for the business opened up: laminating. During this time the team grew to six. Very quickly the building became too small and in 1965 new land in Bertschikon, "Zürcher Oberland", was purchased.  A new printing laboratory was built and throughout the years constantly extended, adapted and updated until the move to Gossau at the end of 2007.

The future is colourful
Once it was clear that the future would be in coloured photography, the company invested a lot of money. In 1971 Marco A. Meyer produced the first colour enlargement. The clients were thrilled: No one counted on such a brilliance.

Moving forward in the 80's and 90's
In 1982 Attilio Meyer AG opened a second business residence in Düsseldorf to be able to look after their ever growing clientele and in 1987 another affiliated company was established in Heidelberg. This new business helped to access a fresh second market. Today Attilio Meyer AG Germany deals under the name of WSD Werbesystem Display GmbH in Karlsruhe. In the 90’s Attilio Meyer AG was the first provider of large-size images, which were converted from conventional into digital photography. Light-resistant and water proofed prints extend the array. The images were now able to be placed outdoors and on vehicles.

Large-size image without limits
Since 2001 printing machines are faster and more effective. Better resolution and more brilliance help to reach a new standard of quality . The company invested in new technologies and was able to print more and more materials in wider formats - and most notably – on different fabrics. Unforgotten is the milestone from  2005: when Attilio Meyer covered the entire tower of the Glatt-Zentrum with the largest advertisement in Switzerland. The advertisement surface was 6,582 m2 in total and remained on the building for a couple of months.

Metal construction with unexpected possibilities
In the first years of the 21st century Attilio Meyer extended to another trendsetting area: metal construction and illuminating engineering. A CNC steered manufacturing plant with a highly precise water jet cutting machine opened up new possibilities such us the conversion and the treatment of all kinds of materials and even a computer-controlled machine which is capable for cutting complex forms. The enterprise brought numerous innovations to the market - lightboxes, displays and other advertising media - and was involved in several large-scale projects where their entire know-how was put to good use. A recent example is the event-center and shopping arena “Westside” in Berne, where the Attilio-Meyer team installed, amongst others, several illuminated systems for the eleven Pathé cinemas and the entire guiding system for the Bernaqua Bath and Spa.

The third generation takes over
The exchange from the second to the third generation is becoming apparent. The company is still lead by Marco A. Meyer and his wife Monika M. Meyer, but now their son Marc and daughter Marina are in charge of the production and are also becoming more and more responsible for the management tasks. Soon they will carry the entire responsibility of Attilio Meyer AG.
